Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Taking a Cruise with Kids – What You Should Know
Taking a cruise vacation is a spectacular way to get out of the daily grind and enjoy some quality time with the whole family. If you are planning a cruise with the kids in tow, some additional preparation will be needed to avoid unnecessary headaches.
Lets face it, kids get sick often. Think about your normal life at home and how often you come across a sudden cold, sniffles, belly aches and the like. Take this into consideration when packing. Make sure you have all the normal medications such as cough syrup, aspirin, heating pad, eardrops, etc. before you leave. Many of these items will be available onboard, but it is worth taking your own to be sure you have what you need, the type your child likes, and that you don’t get cheated on the price.
If you have one, it is worthwhile to bring a collapsible stroller with you. These are usually available for a fee onboard but again, its worthwhile to have your own. The ships are very large and there will be a fair amount of walking around to get from one place of interest to the next. Just going to dinner or getting a snack will usually involve a few elevator rides and a stroll down a long hallway or deck path. Be prepared here, you want the stroller you and your child are used to using.
Many cruises offer some sort of baby sitting or child activities where the parents can get away and have some time to themselves. Don’t count on this, however, and be sure to check in advance. Many cruise activities are scheduled throughout the day but there will certainly be ‘down time’ at day or night when your children will need to be entertained. The best advice is to bring along some of the same activities you have at home. Books, games, video games all work well when there is time to be spent in the cabin. You may think “hey, I’ll be on vacation and not spending my time in the cabin”…but you will, trust me.
In conclusion, the moral of the story about bringing your kids on a cruise vacation is to bring the comforts of home with you. Anything you can pack that is not too overbearing to carry you should consider bringing. Following this advice will make for a much more comfortable and relaxing vacation for you and your kids. Should I let the Cruise Line Make My Airline Reservation For My Cruise Vacation?
When considering a cruise vacation this is a very good question. The Cruise lines pre-book massive amounts of airline space. That allows you better access to flights, and many cruise lines pass on their reasonable prices to passengers whose travel agents book through them.
If you choose to make airline reservations on your own please select flight schedules that allow you enough time to get to the pier in time for the ship’s departure on the day of your cruise travel. That applies in reverse, leave enough breathing room to get to the airport with time to make your return flights after your lovely cruise vacation.
Two advantages of using cruise line provided airfare are:
By purchasing cruise line airfare, you also receive transfers to and from the airport to the pier.
If your flights are delayed and arrive past the time of the ship’s departure, the cruise line assumes responsibility for either delaying the ship’s sailing or getting you to the cruise ships first port of call.
You should let your travel agent book the Airline Reservations through the Cruise Line for safety reasons. This basically makes the Cruise Line responsible in the event of a flight or sailing delay or cancellation. Here’s a cruise tip, for a small additional “air deviation” fee, most cruise lines will attempt to book you on the airline or flights of your choice.
If you have frequent-flier miles be sure to book your flights well in advance to ensure your arrival on time. When scheduling your flight home after the cruise, be sure to take into account disembarking time from the ship and local transportation time to the airport. Leave plenty of time because some local airports may not be as sophisticated as those you might be used to. And in today’s world, security will make it even longer to board your flight for your cruise travel.
You should arrive at least a day before the cruise vacation, especially if you are flying a long distance to pick up the ship. That way, you can rest up and be ready to enjoy every moment of your cruise. You get the added benefit of not having to worry about a delayed or cancelled flight, causing you to miss the cruise. This was the best cruise tip I have learned over the years.
When you are flying to your cruise vacation you will have to consider baggage weight. Generally there are no restrictions on how much luggage you can take aboard ship, but do remember that if your cruise vacation involves a flight, airlines have their own baggage allowance restrictions. These vary on scheduled flights, depending on airline and route. Please note that the allowance may be less on international flights. When flying from New Zealand back to Miami after our millennium cruise vacation, Quanta’s airline was very strict about weight and charged us because we were over.
The cruise lines will generally supply you with its luggage tags which will be in addition to your personal ID tags. The luggage tags will be included with your cruise documents which normally arrive 2-3 weeks before your cruise vacation.
Here are some cruise tips we have learned through our cruise travel.
It is strongly suggested that you remove old airline flight tags to eliminate ANY possibility of confusion on the part of the airline.
An extra folded flight bag takes up very little room and it can be handy on your way home when you have more to carry then can be placed in your original luggage.
Be sure to keep your travel documents, identification documents, medications, valuables, a set of clean underwear, credit cards, cash and travelers checks on your person or in your carry-on luggage. Horror stories concerning lost airline luggage are well known.
When traveling outside the United States to pick up your cruise ship, make photocopies of your passport and cruise itinerary, place one set in each bag prior to checking them with the airline. This will ensure you that your luggage will catch up to you at some time during your cruise vacation.
When waiting in line or sitting in an airport, always have the strap to your carry-on luggage wrapped around an arm or leg, then it won’t disappear without your knowledge.
Be very careful using your telephone card in airports. People will stand behind you and watch as you tap in the numbers. And much to your dismay, a month after your cruise travel, you get a huge telephone bill. I know it happened it me. I was not responsible for paying the bill, but it was a hassle.
It is useful to take an overnight bag for the last night of your cruise vacation. Your cabin steward will be collecting all checked bags the night before disembarkation, sometime around midnight. If you have this small overnight bag you can use it for the clothes you wore the evening before. And as mentioned, it comes in handy for packing all the mementos you picked up along the way.
The most important cruise tip is to relax and enjoy your cruise vacation. You deserve it.
Happy Cruising!

Eastern Caribbean
Choosing a Caribbean Island Vacation is difficult because to the outsider the Caribbean is just the Caribbean, with each island being much like the other. The insider will however tell you that each island has its own identity, none more so than Antigua.
The island of Antigua is always associated with Barbuda, but this article isn’t about Antigua and Barbuda, but about what it is that should make you want to choose Antigua for your Caribbean Island Vacation.
Antigua is the largest of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean, north of Montserrat and Guadeloupe, and to the south and east of Nevis, St Kitts, St Barts, and St Martin. It is some fourteen miles long and eleven miles wide, totalling 108 square miles. This means with its 365 beaches, one for every day of the year, there is plenty Antigua to explore, and furthermore there is lots to see thanks to the close links with Britain and the British Navy in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century.
Visitors who have chosen Antigua for their Caribbean Island Vacation, also inevitably visit English Harbour which is Antigua’s evocative historical district, around Nelson’s Dockyard National Park. The whole harbour area was the headquarters of the fleet in Nelson’s time. There are historical buildings and fortifications to be seen around the park.
Antigua’s beaches are of course a huge reason for taking a Caribbean Island Vacation here. The majority of the beaches are on the west coast , which is the more sheltered calm and protected part.
All of the beaches are open to the public and each has different characteristics, so the main difficulty you will have is finding the perfect Antigua beach for you. One piece of advice is to never go to isolated beaches on your own, and another is to make sure you get good directions before you go.
On the northwest coast you will find Dickenson Bay and Runaway Bay, both highly developed and great resort beaches. Closest to St Johns are Fort James, and Deep Bay. In the winter surfers go to Galley Bay and the four beaches at Hawksbill are impressive, just beware that one is a nudist beach.
On the southwest and south coast of Antigua are where you will find the less visited and developed beaches because the area is quite hilly. A road winds along the coast here and you will find beaches like Fryes Bay, Darkwood Beach, and the beaches around Johnsons Point.
Rendezvous Bay, and Doigs Beach are especially very quiet beaches but not easy to get to. If you are looking for an Antigua Beach to relax on after visiting English Harbour then try Pigeon Point.
On the east coast, the south east corner is Half Moon Bay, is a national park, and if you want a family beach, then this and Long Bay which is as far to the east as you can go are both outstanding. The beaches facing east are quite rough but great for beachcombing.
Whether it is history and sightseeing or beaches, Antigua has something for everyone as a Caribbean Island Vacation

Caribbean Cruise Lines
Recently, a client was concerned about taking a Caribbean Cruise in the month of October and sought my advice. October is the only month that he can take vacation and he was concerned that a hurricane might interrupt his plans. I told him that I understood his position, and that I once had the same concern until I had my first October Caribbean Cruise. In fact, I prefer an October cruise for a few reasons, which we will discuss later.
Hurricane season in the North Atlantic Basin (the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea) is officially from June 1 to November 30. These dates are not carved in stone, and hurricanes have occurred outside of these dates. However, over 96% of tropical activity occurred during these dates, with the majority of Hurricanes occurring during August and September. During 2007, Hurricanes Dean, Felix and Karen, occurred during the months of August and September. Clearly, the possibility of a Hurricane in October is a wild card.
In fact, I took my first October cruise after 9-11. It was amazing. The children were in school, the teenagers were in college, and the adults had the cruise ship to themselves. I was on the “fun ship” having a time of my life. My journey started in Miami, with stops in the Grand Cayman, Ocho Rios and Cozumel. I could still remember the clear days and gorgeous nights, participating in activities such as Fiesta Seminars, Body Art, Art Auction, Afternoon Tea and Music, Golf, Bingo,
Dancing and a Late Night Show. These all added to my divine cruise experience. Cruises, unlike many other vacation options, provide twenty-four hours world class buffets with European-style cafés, sushi bars and 24-hour pizzeria. You just can’t miss the extravagant midnight buffets. Hey, what more can a guy want?
Additionally, cruise prices in October are much lower than most times of the year. For example, a 7 Day Carnival Cruise to the Western Caribbean in July 2008 starts at $949 per person. However, the same itinerary in October 2008 starts at $579.00,
an immediate savings of approximately $370.00 per person. However, if you are still concerned about the possibility of an October Hurricane interrupting your plan, I would recommend a Vacation Protection Plan (VPP) to mitigate against the wild card risk. VPPs cover trip cancellation, interruption, baggage and contents, and accidents. More importantly, it is unlikely
that you will be at Sea and have to face a hurricane. Cruise Ships cost millions of dollars and it would be hard to fathom a cruise lines placing its assets at risk. If you are at sea and a storm develops the cruise line will change the itinerary to a safer port of call.
Yes, there is a risk with an October cruise, but that risk is no greater than a cruise from June to September. An October cruise will cost you less, the islands will have fewer tourists giving you the best deals, and you can have a great vacation. October cruises are just about the same as anytime of the year. Quite frankly, I love October cruises and I think you will too.

Caribbean Cruise Lines
A cruise vacation is always an exciting opportunity to unwind and see places and people that you have never seen before. And in the meantime, you can get away from the regular pace of your normal life. But before setting sail it’s a good idea to know as much as you can about cruising, especially if it’s your first cruise, and so here are some things you should know before you leave on your next cruise vacation:
* Most cruise lines have policies against bringing liquor on board with you. You can certainly buy alcoholic drinks once you are on board, as they are plentiful, but generally they do not allow you to buy alcoholic beverages at ports of call and then bring them with you to drink them on board the ship. Sometimes they will hold a bottle of liquor that you buy for you in safe keeping until the end of the cruise, but just make sure of this policy in advance though.
* Smoking policies vary considerably among the various cruise lines but all do not allow smoking in restaurants on board. They also restrict smoking in some parts of the ship for the benefit of their passengers. For those that wish to enjoy a completely smoke free atmosphere, Carnival does offer such an experience on board the Paradise cruise ship. Otherwise, just check with each cruise line to see how well they accomodate your needs in this area.
* If you are traveling alone, it may be best to look for singles cruises as most standard cruise fares are made for two people occupying the same room. If you are traveling alone then, you are obviously paying quite a bit more for the ticket than is necessary. Many singles cruises also afford an opportunity to meet others of similar interests, so they can be beneficial in many ways.
* You will still be able to stay in touch while cruising as all cruise lines make available phone calls and internet access for those that wish to email. However, expect extra charges for taking advantage of these services.
* If you are going to sail, use the right lingo when you do. Port means left, and starboard is right. The vessel is a ship, not a boat. Aft is the back of the ship and the bow is the front. All flooring is called a deck, not a floor. If you are going to enjoy the adventure, why not use the colorful language too, right?
Cruising on royal carribean cruise lines, carnaval cruises, and disney cruise ships, as well as others, can be a fun adventure for everyone if you understand in advance what requirements are involved. So be sure to read them carefully as supplied by your cruise line and you can have the vacation cruise of your life.

Caribbean Cruise Lines
1. You have children age 12 and under
Every daughter should experience the charisma of Disney at some detail during their childhood. It is an unusual slip they will never forget and will esteem evermore. The only way they’ll ever experience Castaway Cay is aboard a Disney vessel. A Disney cruise is a brilliant way to experience everything Disney has to propose.
2. You have teenagers
Disney cruises realized long ago the small children grow adult and developed programs for teenagers also. If you go on a cruise lacking your youth, you’ll care about what they’re liability while you are away. So earn them along on a Disney cruise – they’ll dearest it.
3. You are planning a cruise lacking your children
Why authority the kids with grandma when you can take the kids along on a Disney cruise? Disney cruises arrange itineraries for your children (all the way to midnight) no material the age group. So, each of you can have yourselves separately, and come together for meals, ports-of-call, etc. When thechildren are with you, all the worrying about their well-being is eliminated.
4. Away time for the parents
With the kids safely onboard and their fun-full itineraries intended, Mom and Dad can have sometime on their own with the serenity-of-care that theirchildren are innocent. Should the necessary develop; an onboard paging routine can make commerce with parents at any time. Whether you want to go to an onboard auburn shop, fitness spa, or a disco – Disney cruises understands and can accommodate you.
5. Excellent dining
Opulent dining choices are forever at, or near the top of all cruisers’ lists of what they want in a cruise. Disney understands this and offers brilliant food for all. There is even the adults-only correct restaurant, the Palo, which specializes in Northern Italian cookery.
